“Change is the standard, it’s more about properly engaging with students”
With StuCo elections coming up, multiple of your fellow peers take the stand in an effort to create change. The Voice had the opportunity to hear from many of them, such as Jenson Parker and Kyan De Jong.
Get to know them:
Meet Kyan de Jong (10th Grade) and Jenson Parker (12th Grade). Two students, two athletes - and two people striving to maximize ISA’s potential. An area of interest for this pair is the gap between their ISA experiences - while Jenson, a “lifer,” has been with an ISA Bear for 15 years - this will be Kyans third year with us. This comes with an ability to recognize the needs of both longterm and newer students; proving to be an advantage for a wide array of students.
However, there is more to them then what exists within ISA’s walls. Both avid football players (for both the NECIS and club teams), it goes without saying that we can expect sports teams to be a priority this year.
Why are they running for these positions?
As president Jenson hopes to make our school a fun environment to be in, he wants to “make other students feel heard” -Jenson.
Work ethic in a team setting:
“I never prioritise my personal gain over the needs of others.”
Beyond an athletic setting, their competitive spirits have allowed them to strengthen their leadership qualities and build on their collaborative agility. “Communication with fellow Student Council members as well as my football team mates have shown me that I work super hard in order to get the best out of others.” -Jenson
Changes they hope to implement:
They hope to increase access to academic resources for DP students. However, it won’t be limited to them “I want to make learning easier and more streamlined for students” -Jenson. Furthermore the pair also hopes to better community engagement. As a part of Student council last year they feel there was a disconnect between StuCo and the rest of high school. Jenson and Kyan want to implement ideas that will increase the quality of life of students at ISA such as “indoor charging space for e-bike batteries & a revision of the issues with prices and availability at Georges” -Jenson
